New dimension of ground traffic control at airports

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Airport GTS (Ground Traffic Surveillance, Safety & Support) system is a state-of-the-art ground traffic surveillance and safety support system developed for Warsaw Chopin Airport. The project was initiated by Polish Airports S.A. It enables real-time visualization, localization and identification of objects in the maneuvering field thanks to the integration of data from various surveillance sources and the use of a multi-radar tracker. It incorporates safety functions, monitors runways and restricted areas, and detects potential conflicts between objects through RMCA (Runway Monitoring and Conflict Alerting).

The entire project takes into account the most important mission of Polish Airports S.A., namely to ensure the safe operation of Chopin Airport. This project proves that in a world of advanced technology and process automation, dialogue, cooperation and understanding of each other’s needs are still crucial to the implementation of complex systems.

WHAT NEEDS DOES THE INNOVATION ADDRESS?

The rapid increase in passenger traffic, the complex layout of an airport with intersecting runways, and periodically deteriorating weather conditions that limit visibility pose threats to ground air traffic safety. Traditional air traffic control (ATC) systems are costly, focused on the needs of the air traffic control tower and often do not meet the specifics of ground operations.

Airport GTS integrates multiple surveillance data into a single, intuitive interface, increasing situational awareness and minimizing the risk of human error and lane incursions. The system facilitates ground traffic management.

Airport GTS is a system characterized by:
– unique functionality – most ground traffic monitoring systems are oriented to the needs of air traffic controllers, not the operational needs of airport ground services;

The system complies with the standards of the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System A- SMGCS (Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System), developed by the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL) – while adapting to local realities.

Airport GTS is not a “classic” system for air traffic control, but a practical tool to support the safety and efficiency of airport ground operations, which fills an important market gap and the current needs of Chopin Airport with the growing number of operations.
