The event is a competition aimed at young people aged 15-19 operating within schools, associations, scout troops, Youth Culture Centers or youth ministries. But it’s not just a competition – it’s also an invitation to look at the figure of Fredro in a contemporary and personal way, through the prism of the young generation’s own experiences, values and challenges.
Fredro is more than the author of “The Revenge”
Aleksander Fredro is a symbol of comedy and brilliant language in Polish culture. However, the organizers propose to see him more broadly – as a multidimensional figure whose life can become a starting point for a conversation about modern times.
Young people are invited to work with three perspectives:
- Fredro – poet, writer and artist,
- Fredro – a noble entrepreneur and social activist,
- Fredro – a soldier and a patriot.
This is a proposal that goes beyond the school interpretation of reading. Here Fredro becomes an inspiration for a conversation about creativity, social responsibility, work ethos, courage and civic engagement.
Team competition: creativity, cooperation, responsibility
To participate, young people must apply in teams of 6 to 12 people with an adult chaperone and represent a specific organization. The deadline for applications is March 20.
The competition task is to prepare a 1-minute video reel that will present the team’s idea for an activity inspired by the figure of Fredro. This is a preview of the project that participants will realize if they make it to the finals.
Importantly, the organization submitting the team agrees to share its social media channels (Facebook and Instagram) to publish the competition roll. This is an element that teaches young people not only creativity, but also institutional cooperation and responsibility for communication.
Ambassadors: authorities from three worlds
The project is supported by three distinct personalities that symbolically represent three perspectives on Fredro:
- Prof. Michal Rusinek – poet and writer,
- Dr. Irena Eris – entrepreneur and creator of a strong Polish brand,
- Gen. Mieczyslaw Bieniek – soldier.
This is an important element of the project: young people see that the cultural heritage is spoken about by people who themselves contribute to the modern history of Poland in their respective fields.
Culture as a space for identity construction
At a time when the younger generation faces an overabundance of stimuli and global narratives, projects such as “Alexander Fredro’s 233rd Birthday” remind us of the power of local roots. Fredro was not only an outstanding writer, but also a socially and politically engaged man. His life shows that creativity can go hand in hand with responsibility for the community.
For young people, it’s a chance to answer the question: What does it mean to be an artist today? What does it mean to be entrepreneurial? What does it mean to be a patriot?
