ABOUT THE PROJECT

PLLuM (Polish Large Language Model) is the first Polish language model based on artificial intelligence (AI) on such a scale, developed by Wroclaw University of Technology. The project was born out of the need to create an autonomous, secure and domestic counterpart to systems such as ChatGPT or Claude that understands and processes Polish at the highest level. The research team, led by Jan Kocon, Ph.D., Prof. of PWr, in cooperation with technology organizations (including Hive, NASK, Ministry of Digitization), is creating an open infrastructure and language model for scientific, administrative and business applications. PLLuM is intended to be the basis of a national AI ecosystem in which data and technologies are created in Poland – with full control and transparency.

WHAT NEEDS DOES THE INNOVATION ADDRESS?

The project to build a large language model in Poland is a step toward full digital sovereignty – developing artificial intelligence without the need for foreign AI tools. The initiative is intended to support public administration by creating intelligent chatbots and citizen service systems that can be integrated with applications such as mCitizen. The locally-trained model ensures secure data processing that complies with European ethical and privacy standards. The project is based on cooperation between science and business, creating an open research platform to support the development of AI startups and academic initiatives. It also aims to provide Poles with modern language tools – artificial intelligence that truly understands the Polish language, its syntax, context and cultural nuances.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES

The first national language model (LLM) in Poland is being developed by a team of researchers from the Wroclaw University of Technology and represents a breakthrough in building national technological independence. The project provides full security and transparency through complete control over the training process and data sources. It is a cross-political initiative – a public enterprise created for the benefit of citizens, science and the technological development of the country. The model remains open to institutions, companies and startups, offering an infrastructure for experimentation and implementation of artificial intelligence applications in Polish. The whole project is implemented in accordance with European values and regulations such as the AI Act, respecting privacy, AI ethics and sustainability principles.
