Raw materials of the future from coffee grounds

ABOUT THE PROJECT

EcoBean is a Polish greentech and circular economy startup that is developing a technology for the full processing of coffee waste (so-called spent coffee grounds) into high-value biocommodities. The company was founded at the intersection of science and business, including in cooperation with Warsaw University of Technology, and its founders have combined experience from the coffee and technology industries.

EcoBean has developed a unique process that recovers up to five fractions of raw materials from coffee grounds, such as coffee oil, antioxidants, lignin, polylactide (PLA) and protein additives.

The company’s solutions are used in a wide range of industries – from cosmetics and food, to packaging and pharmaceuticals, providing a low-carbon alternative to traditional materials.

WHAT NEEDS DOES THE INNOVATION ADDRESS?

EcoBean is responding to the global problem of the huge amount of waste generated by the coffee industry. Thousands of tons of grounds are generated every day in Europe, most of which end up in landfills or incinerators instead of being reused.

The company’s innovation is to fully valorize this waste – transforming it into valuable raw materials with a low carbon footprint. By doing so, EcoBean not only reduces the coffee industry’s negative impact on the environment, but also creates new sources of economic value.

The solution also responds to growing industry demand for sustainable materials and alternatives to petrochemical feedstocks. Coffee-derived biosolids can be used in the production of cosmetics, packaging or food additives, supporting the transition to a closed-loop economy.

In addition, EcoBean is developing a model of cooperation with large food service chains and manufacturers, arranging for the collection and processing of coffee waste on an industrial scale.
