ABOUT THE PROJECT

Green Sequest is a Polish clean-tech company that develops technology for the permanent removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere using specially prepared rock. It utilizes antigorite serpentinite – a mineral rich in magnesium and calcium – which naturally reacts with CO₂ and stores it in a stable form.

The company accelerates a process that has been occurring in nature for millions of years. Crushed serpentinite has greater contact with water and air, allowing it to absorb carbon dioxide more quickly. The CO₂ bound in this way does not return to the atmosphere for over 10,000 years.

Green Sequest is primarily developing the application of this technology in agriculture. It is also working on its use in construction, industry, and road and rail infrastructure.

WHAT NEEDS DOES THE INNOVATION ADDRESS?

Limiting new emissions is not enough to effectively counteract climate change. Solutions are also needed that remove carbon dioxide already released into the atmosphere and safely store it for a very long time.

Green Sequest addresses this challenge by leveraging the natural properties of rocks. The technology does not rely on temporary gas storage in tanks. Carbon dioxide is bound in stable mineral compounds, making the risk of its re-release very low.

The solution can simultaneously support agriculture. Serpentinite provides the soil with magnesium and other nutrients needed by plants, and also helps reduce its acidification. As a result, applying the rock to fields can combine CO₂ removal with improved growing conditions. The company is conducting research on the use of serpentinite in the cultivation of cereals, corn, and potatoes, among others. It has also obtained approval for its product as a mineral fertilizer.
