Polish students have built an innovative planetary rover.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Kalman is a high-tech, mobile and autonomous exploration robot. The rover has a lightweight frame, a precision manipulator and a gripper equipped with a camera system and interchangeable jaws. It features a modular structure for easy servicing and upgrading. The robot can perform research, service and support tasks. Recent achievements of the robot and the team include first place at the University Rover Challenge 2024, second place at the European Rover Challenge 2024, first place at the Canadian International Rover Challenge 2023 and first place at the European Rover Challenge 2023.

WHAT NEEDS DOES THE INNOVATION ADDRESS?

Exploration rovers often operate in extreme environments where real-time control is not possible. Classic navigation and communication systems are sometimes unreliable in such environments. Innovative algorithms used in the design allow the robot to precisely analyze the environment, minimize inaccuracies and reach the target with high accuracy. The modular design facilitates quick replacement of components and adaptation of the robot to different tasks, which significantly increases the efficiency and reliability of the entire system.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES

The Kalman is distinguished by its advanced autonomy and modular design, allowing it to be easily upgraded and adapted to new challenges. State-of-the-art cameras and sensors aid navigation, and an innovative communication system ensures reliability even over long distances. Airless wheels improve traction in difficult terrain, which increases the robot’s mobility. All solutions are tested in a realistic simulator, which speeds up the implementation of changes and minimizes the risk of damaging the equipment during experiments.
